I thought she was my friend, everyone in the class did too. I hated history but liked her, and so I paid particular attention. (Debbion, quoted in Cotton, 1998, p. 35) The good teachers are the ones who know how to listen as well as talk, who don’t make you feel that your opinion isn’t worth anything. It’s not age that’s important; it’s their attitude to young people. There are some who don’t seem to enjoy what they’re doing, and there are others who seem so enthusiastic about their subjects. It’s brilliant being with those sort of teachers.

Yet there is a limit to the care that teachers are able to provide. It cannot be unconditional. Unconditional care is a part of a loving relationship, while care as part of a loving pedagogical relationship is part of the teacher’s responsibility to educate. Many children …feel alienated from their school work, separated from the adults who try to teach them, and adrift in a world perceived as baffling and hostile. At the same time, most teachers work very hard and express deep concern for their students.

In general the high level of synchrony in an interaction means the people involved like each other…synchrony reflects the depths of engagement between the parties; if you’re highly engaged, your moods begin to mesh, whether positive or negative. (Goleman, 1995, pp. 116–17) Teachers with a passion for teaching like children and young people, feel comfortable in teaching them, are interested in learning about their backgrounds and present realities, treat them as individuals, and listen actively to what they say and how they act.
