For those of my boomed generation who peered askance when mainframes, minicomputers, microcomputers, personal computers and smartphones metamorphosed from the slide rule; for those stalwarts of Generation X who joined this journey in the 1980s when simple word-processing machines, large luggable bricks called mobile phones and squawking magic boxes called modems became ubiquitous; for the pioneers of Generation Y who are calmly nonchalant about their ability to stand in some corner of a foreign field with a device no bigger than a bar of chocolate, tethered to nowhere, and talk and send pictures to friends and family near the White Cliffs.

Did they cover that, even mention it, too? The examples of multi-channels I have shared are by no means exhaustive. My strong advice here is for you to use social media as a means to support the other appropriate channels to market your business. When we carry out workshops with clients, we always cover the other channels and agree which ones are appropriate, their priorities, and how social media can positively contribute to the overall marketing strategy and mix. One crucial thing I also believe many in my profession fail to share, is how important building a network fits into your business strategy.

People pick up on this fast. It’s vitally important to show vitality when networking. Positivity rules, negativity doesn’t. Have just one or two inattentive, or even disgruntled, attendees in a room and it can degenerate the whole atmosphere. Great networking is about bringing the best out of people.
