He picked up where he had left off in exploring the persona he had developed in Beppo, that of a worldly-wise gentleman with a sharp wit and a vast fund of clever stories. Readers who heard in advance about the forthcoming work and who had been pleased with the sense that Beppo's speaker was Lord Byron, were aroused by the news that his new poem would be about Don Juan. Byron would again take up the subject of comparative sexual morality, an irresistible source of controversy for the British reading public in the decades following the French Revolution.

Its rhymes demand that the reader hear and recite the word this way. 1 Compounding the difficulty for some readers of learning to say Juan in this way is the fact that the word in question is not just any word in the poem, but rather the text's most prominent and essential syntactical marker, the name of the hero. To understand better what is at stake when a poet gets the name of his hero 'wrong', it may be useful to consider the broader implications of name calling and miscalling. Before doing so it will be necessary to introduce the poem in its initial public appearance.

Byron's poetical commandments provoked some of the most strenuous denunciations of his poem and character. 8 It is important at this distance in time not only to acknowledge the radical subtext these devices carried, but also to observe the way poetic and political concerns overlap and interpenetrate one another. In these poetical commandments Byron's commitment to the Augustans and the poetic tradition of mock-heroic collapses into an identity with Hone's commitment to revising and revitalizing the eighteenth-century tradition of radical satire.
